
CA Security Guard New Permit
What is my total cost?

Class Fees: $100 Cash, due when you arrive.

Application Fee $55, paid to the State of CA. Paid online with a card or via mail (Check/MO). This can be completed later, after the class.

Background/LiveScan Fingerprint $95 approx. This will be completed later, after the class.
Your total cost will be approximately $250. You only need the $100 when you come for the class.

Documents to Bring: Valid, Govt. issued picture ID. Know your Social Security Number.
You must meet the following requirements:

You must be 18 years of age or older.

You cannot have a violent felony or misdemeanor. For more details, read HERE.

You must be a legal US resident to pass your background (Livescan).

You must read and write English to pass the test; No High School is required.

Before Coming to Class Recommendations (But not Required):

Set up an online BREEZE account so you may save weeks on processing time.

Follow the Steps HERE to Register. Info to complete the online app will be given in class which will be unique for your app.
Dress Code: Business Casual. A shirt/top, with pants/jeans/dress are preferred. No shorts, No Tank Tops, No Crop Tops, No Spaghetti Tops, No Low Cut Tops, No short or mini dresses. Women must wear supportive brassieres for Defensive Tactics. Shoes or boots closed-toe and heels covered. No open-toe footwear. No Uniforms, Patches, Shields, or Badges for Police or Security. Bring a jacket as it can get cold.
Additional items to Bring: Working pen and notebook. Bring a packed lunch& drink for yourself.

Can I work before I receive my guard card?
It is illegal to work as Security without a Guard Card. Like driving without a permit.
How long will it take to get my guard card from the state after completing all requirements?
It varyies from person to person, however you can check the current

Can I get a guard card with a criminal record?
BSIS is the only organization that can answer this question Please contact them.

If BSIS denies me a permit, do I get a refund?
No. There are NO refunds from state or for any class.
How old do you have to be to get a guard card?
Eighteen years old for Guard Card, Pepper Spray, and Baton. For Firearms, you have to be 21.
Does the Guard Card expire?
Guard Card is valid for two years. The expiration date is printed on all cards.
If I fail the course, do I get my money back?
No. However, You have 180 days (6 months) in which to complete the course. The Bureau allows each student to retake the final exam as many times as necessary in order to pass. If you fail to complete the course within 180 days, then you will have to pay for the course again.
If I completed PC 832, do I still have to take this course?
Yes. PC Section 832 training is not accepted by BSIS and cannot be used as a substitute.
What is the passing score for the written exam?
100%. You cannot miss even 1 question. However, we will allow you to retake the test if you fail. Also, it is an open book, open notes test. To make sure you have the best chance of passing the test, you should download and print the Powers to Arrest manual. Click here to download the manual.
Will this class teach any hands-on tactics like handcuffing?
No. Defensive tactics (self-defense), proper search techniques and handcuffing are learned in other classes. This class is an overview of the powers to arrest and does not provide practical training in how to physically arrest a suspect. Please see all other training we provide.
