BSIS now only allows the Following Calibers to be added to your Gun Card:

9mm, .40, .45, .38, .357, 10mm and .380

Why a Caliber Addition:

  • Because your employer requires a specific caliber.

  • You have limited choices on the gun, and that is what is available to you.

  • You like seeing all the calibers on your permit.

Disadvantages of getting unnecessary Calibers on your permit:

  • Ammo Cost: The state requires you to shoot each caliber at least twice each year. Ammo costs can add up very fast. Not to mention, certain calibers are hard to find.

  • Additional Costs for Qualifications: Instructors will charge you additional for each time you have to shoot the course for each caliber, as it takes time, energy, and additional paperwork and tracking.

  • Time: Bi-annual qualifications can cost way more time if you have to qualify for two calibers versus six! It will cost you about three times as long.

  • Nobody ever got hired because they had more calibers listed on their permit. Moreover, you would not want to work for someone who has this weird criterion!

What is ideal?

  • 9mm and .40 are ideal and sufficient. In another 5 to 10 years, .40 should also go by the wayside. Of all the large employers in California that require a specific Caliber, these two are sufficient.

  • If your employer allows it and you like to switch between the Modern and the John Wayne look, go for it. Life is short!

  • My opinions above are to save you time and money. The more Calibers you have, the better it is for your instructor. I am not complaining.

After you submit your application for Caliber Add:

  • You still need to qualify for other calibers at the time they are due.

  • You will need to also qualify for the new caliber even if it is not yet appearing on your license.
